About John Martin State Wildlife Area

Located along the Arkansas River in southeastern Colorado, John Martin State Wildlife Area encompasses a diverse landscape dominated by the John Martin Reservoir and surrounding wetland, grassland, and riparian ecosystems. The area was established to provide critical habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife, and is managed primarily for hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation. The reservoir covers approximately 11,600 acres and is central to the area's outdoor recreation opportunities, supporting species such as ducks, geese, bass, catfish, and walleye. History at John Martin ties back to the construction of the John Martin Dam in the 1940s, which created the reservoir to provide flood control, irrigation, and recreation. The wildlife area is especially popular during migration seasons when thousands of waterfowl pass through, creating prime birdwatching opportunities. Anglers frequent the lake for sport fishing, while hunters visit during regulated seasons for waterfowl and upland game. Beyond fishing and hunting, visitors can explore hiking and wildlife viewing along several trails and enjoy scenic views of plains and water. The area's remote location also offers quiet camping and photographic opportunities. Though primarily known for hunting and fishing, the combination of open water, wetlands, and grasslands supports diverse flora and fauna, including several species of shorebirds, raptors, and native prairie wildlife. John Martin State Wildlife Area attracts both local outdoor enthusiasts and visitors seeking the unique combination of wetland habitat and plains ecosystems in eastern Colorado.
